Thx, H for the photo.

The Blondie's moment

All right. So the story is that Blondie couldn't open internet. The skype magically worked, but the internet didn't. That of course wasn't surprising to her. Blondie called in for help. So the long skype call began.

She owns a dell laptop with vista on it. Myself being vista-illiterate, wanted a cli or cmd.exe as the easiest way to fix things - the command line - instead of wobbling through the windows/clicks for eternity.

How to do it in vista? Easy : "Start button" then "All programs" >> "Accessories" >> right click on "Command Prompt" and click on "Run as Administrator". Easy. The glory of command prompt with sudo-ed elevated account. That part I have taken from here.

Now, we should figure out what was the story with her internet. nslookup blahu.com, revieled, what I expected, the dns servers were dead, no answer, even though they were pingable. Time for some windows cli magic. I haven't got a clue the netsh is quite a powerful tool. She was more then happy to dig into the dark side of the vista, the dark cli behind windows. So to add the DNS server to the list of already assigned by DHCP you do "just" this:

C:\> netsh
netsh > interface
netsh interface > ipv4
netsh interface ipv4 > add dnsserver "Wireless Local Connection" A.B.C.D 1
netsh interface ipv4 >

That was taken from here

Now her internet worked and that was all she needed to know. Apparently we both had good fun, especially when I was trying to run the commands on non-elevated account, and I was given lot's of complaints from windows. And finally when we moved to elevated prompt and run the "add dnsserver" successfully with no error, Blondie was deeply dissapointed that nothing happened. Anyway hope that would help you out some day.

Big kudos to skype for not using DNS (at least not only), otherwise this saga would continue until I hear "Are you trying to offend me, here?"

Advocate

Enough! I am not going to propose ubuntu to anyone anymore who wants my opinion on the best desktop system. I am too old for hacks n'tips to make the basic things working. I am great believer that when you design the whole thing from a start you can succeed, and create a hassle free and useful environment. I am not enjoying the trouble anymore - why my father's ubuntu after last upgrade adds 30s latency to each skype call? Why should I care? Who cares? Manamana...

Classful networking in Windows

Recently we came across a very strange case in our work. One of our co-workers got Magnet's Bitstream service and was quite unfortunate to get an IP from Class C, ending in 255 (Last octet all ones). To his surprise (and ours), Magnet's superior service ( ;) ) turned out to block random sites, including its own website. After some troubleshooting and sniffing on the webserver it turned out that Windows 2k3 is not processing SYN packets that it is receiving from the victim IP. Also when pinging the victim IP, both incoming and outgoing packets were seen on the wireshark, but windows actually didn't see the packets. Very strange. Googling found that bug on Microsoft help and support. These people found that before us.

So be warned and if your networks belong to:

Windows based websites (NT and followers, excluding Vista) are prone to this bug.

In a land where yellow pants have more repect that any human rights, they found a way to actually feel compassion and confront unhuman rights of Kin Dza Dza galaxy. I recommend.
